Identity Verification Is Coming – Here’s Why You Should Act Now

Updated – 5 August 2025

As part of our continued efforts to support compliance and make things easier for our clients, we wanted to bring your attention to an important change coming from Companies House.

From 18 November 2025, it will become mandatory for all directors, Persons of Significant Control (PSCs), and individuals who file documents for companies to verify their identity.

This is part of a wider push for transparency, designed to help prevent fraud and ensure only legitimate individuals are involved in UK companies.

What’s Changing?

  • From 18 November 2025:
    • Identity verification will be required for anyone becoming a director or PSC.
  • Existing directors and PSCs:
    • Will have until November 2026 to complete their ID checks.

Anyone who fails to verify by the deadline won’t be allowed to act as a director or PSC and risks serious penalties, including fines or even imprisonment.

Can You Verify Early?

Yes, and we’d recommend you do.

Companies House introduced a voluntary ID verification system on 8 April 2025, meaning you can now verify your identity before the mandatory rollout.

How Can You Verify?

You have two options:

  1. Direct with Companies House
Use the GOV.UK ID Check app to submit ID documents such as your UK passport or driving licence. Linked at the bottom of this article.
  2. Via a Trusted Provider
Accountants like us can verify your identity on your behalf. We’re registered as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) and will be using Thirdfort (a government-certified digital identity platform) to carry out these checks securely.

Once verified, you’ll receive a personal verification code from Companies House. From 18 November, you’ll need to use this code when appointed to any new company role. You’ll also be able to log into Companies House to view your ID verification deadlines across all roles.

Why It Matters

  • You’ll stay ahead of deadlines and avoid last-minute compliance stress.
  • You’ll be ready for changes when they become law.
  • You’ll help improve transparency and prevent corporate misuse.

At Whittaker & Co, we’ll start verifying our client base through Thirdfort. We’ll be in touch with full instructions when it’s time for your check.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about the new rules or how this affects your company, just let us know, we’re happy to help.
